The Romanian Society for Cell Biology was founded in 1982 as a national scientific organization under the auspices of the Institute of Cellular Biology and Pathology. It is affiliated to the European Life Scientist Organization (ELSO) and to the International Federation for Cell Biology.

The Society includes 13 regional branches acting in the major academic centres and has 500 registered members.

The abstracts of the Annual meetings are published. The papers presented at the meetings are yearly published in extenso in a Proceedings volume.

Nicolae SimionescuProfessor Nicolae Simionescu
Founder of the Romanian Society for Cell Biology
1982

Inaugural speech:

“...we should remember the noble Romanian scholars and scientists, which during hard times found the intellectual and physical resources to create scientific and cultural associations and societies that fundamentally modulated the social-political history of the country.

…to understand our obligation to provide for the future generations a starting place.”

PURPOSE: to promote and develop cell biology in Romania;  bring the varied facets  of cell biology together.

MEANS: scholarly dissemination of research: Annual Meetings, Publications, Summer Schools

ROLE: to ensure the future of basic scientific research by providing free acces for training for students and young investigators. Since its founding, the RSCB has grown to more than 500 members located throughout Romania.

Founding of RSCB: 2 july, 1982 N. Simionescu: Opening remarks

“...Sa ne aducem aminte de minunatii carturari si oameni de stiinta ai  tarii noastre care in vremuri grele, au stiut sa gaseasca resursele spirituale si fizice pentru a crea asociatii si societati stiintifice si culturale care au modulat hotarator istoria social-politica si culturala a tarii.

Sa intelegem obligatia ce ne revine de a lasa generatiilor viitoare un inceput de drum.”

RSCB First Annual Meeting: Bucharest 1982

FITS: concept of a project

  • Fills a gap in knowledge
  • Important to the field and to yourself
  • Tests a hypothesis (rather than being descriptive)
  • Short term investment of one’s time will lead to long term gain for the field

We should never forget and pay tribute the remarkable scientific personalities that in exceedingly hard times  created our Society.

We should understand our MISSION for the present and future generation of cell biologists to protect, defend and guard  the basic science, the only and  sure way to advance the knowledge, to solve the medical and  the economical problems of tomorrow’s  society of the global village.

Maya Simionescu
